New Content ItemNatasha is the Editor of BMC Infectious Diseases. Before joining BMC in June 2023, Natasha began her editorial career as an Editor at The FEBS Journal. She holds both an MSc and PhD in Parasitology and Cell Signalling from The University of Kingston, where she used a combination of bioinformatic and wet lab approaches to explore kinase signalling pathways in the parasite Schistosoma mansoni. Natasha looks forward to promoting Open Science publishing and communication as part of the BMC Series.

Stefan Baral

New Content ItemStefan Baral is a physician epidemiologist and an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health (JHSPH).  Stefan completed his certification in Community Medicine as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and Family medicine with the Canadian Council of Family Physicians. Stefan has also been involved in HIV epidemiology, prevention, and implementation research focused on the epidemiology, human rights contexts, and effective interventions for gay men and other men who have sex with men, transgender women, and female sex workers across Western and Central, and Southern Africa and parts of Asia with support from USAID, CDC, NIH, amfAR, and the Global Fund.  In addition, Stefan has led or supported the implementation and evaluation of HIV prevention studies globally characterizing effective combination HIV prevention packages for key populations across multiple low and income countries.  Stefan acts as the Director of the Key Populations Program for the Center for Public Health and Human Rights at the JHSPH.

Ka Chun Chong

Ka Chun Chong picMarc Ka-chun Chong is an Assistant Professor in the Centre of Health Systems and Policy Research in the School of Public Health and Primary Care, Assistant Professor (by courtesy) in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Associate Researcher (by courtesy) in the Shenzhen Research Institute, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is interested in infectious disease dynamics and environmental epidemiology.  Marc also works as a biostatistician in the school, possessing rich experience in conducting various statistical analyses of academic and industrial clinical trials. For public services, he has been serving as a statistical consultant for the projects held by healthcare officials in Hong Kong.

Kevin Escandón

Kevin EscandonDr. Kevin Escandón is a physician and an infectious diseases academic and researcher. His research interests are focused on HIV and antimicrobial resistance, and he is affiliated with the research group and program in HIV Medicine of the Division of Infectious Diseases and International Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He joined the Editorial Board of BMC Infectious Diseases in 2018 and is a Senior Editorial Board Member since 2020. He is also an Academic Editor for PLOS Global Public Health.


Holly Seale

New Content ItemDr. Holly Seale, PhD is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. She joined as an Associate Editor of BMC Infectious Diseases in 2014 and then moved to Section Editor in 2017. Dr. Seale completed her PhD in epidemiology at the University of Sydney in 2008. During her PhD she worked at the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance and then pursued her postdoctoral training in infectious disease social science research at UNSW, Sydney. Holly’s research focuses on the factors that impact on engagement and compliance with both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical infection prevention strategies including immunisation, the use of respiratory protection and hand hygiene. Her research uses a broad range of qualitative and mixed methods, and focuses on examining the issue from the system, provider and consumer prospective.

Ursula Panzner

Ursula Panzner picUrsula Panzner has masters’ degrees in epidemiology and medical parasitology from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London, UK, and is pursuing her PhD in parasitology with the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, Allschwil, Switzerland. Building on professional experiences gained in university, pharmaceutical and UN-linked sectors, her research interest is in enteric and neglected tropical communicable diseases among the less privileged in African and Asian countries for public health preparedness and response, and evidence-based decision-making on the introduction of control and preventive measures. Complemented by research on novel molecular, genomic, immunologic diagnostics her main field of interest is in the advancement and implementation of vaccines.

Carlo Torti Pic cropped resizedProf. Carlo Torti graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Pavia (Italy) in 1994 and obtained his specialty in Infectious Diseases in 2000 from the University of Brescia, where he worked as Consultant Physician and Assistant Professor in Infectious Diseases from 2001 to 2012. Since 2012, he has been the director of the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Unit of the “Mater Domini” University Hospital of the “Magna Graecia” University of Catanzaro. He is Full Professor of Infectious Diseases, Faculty Member of the PhD Program on Health Sciences at the University “Magna Graecia”, and Adjunct Professor of Infectious Diseases at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart in Rome. He served as Director of the School of Specialization in Infectious and Tropical Diseases of the “Magna Graecia” University and Honorary Lecturer at the University of Makerere (Uganda), School of Medicine. His main areas of interests are: general Infectious Diseases, viro-immunological and clinical outcomes of antiretroviral treatment, HIV antiretroviral drug resistance, co-infection of HIV with hepatitis viruses, epidemiology and management of HCV and HBV infections, antimicrobial drug resistance and antimicrobial stewardship.  During the current pandemic, his main focus of clinical activity and research has been COVID-19. One of his main interests is International Medicine, especially Medical Education of undergraduate and postgraduate students coming from/going to Resource Limited Settings. He has published more than 300 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, thereby meeting the required bibliometric criteria to be included in the list of the top Italian scientists and nominated member of the examining board member for the Italian qualification of Professor (Full and Associate) by the Italian Ministry of the University and Research. Prof. Torti has participated in many international clinical trials, and acted as a member of the Steering Committees of several important cohort studies.

Livia Melo Villar

Livia Melo Villar picDr. Livia Melo Villar has a master’s degree and PhD in Virology (Oswaldo Cruz Foundation). Nowadays, she is the head of Brazilian Reference Center for Viral Hepatitis at Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ). Her research focuses on epidemiology, molecular biology and immunology of viral hepatitis. She is also particularly interested in the development of new technologies for viral diagnosis and the study of human genetics impact on viral hepatitis evolution and treatment.


Honorine Ward

Honorine Ward picDr. Honorine Ward is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and the Division of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Tufts Medical Center. She is on the faculty of the Immunology, and Molecular Microbiology Graduate Programs at the Tufts University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Her basic science research interests are focused on the molecular basis of Cryptosporidium-host cell interactions. Her global health research efforts are directed at the investigation of the natural history and immune responses in cryptosporidiosis in children in resource-constrained settings. Another focus of her research is to investigate the role of the intestinal microbiome in malnourished children, particularly those with cryptosporidiosis and other diarrheal diseases. A more recent research interest is on the pathogenesis of post-acute sequelae of SARS CoV2 infection.
