STEC in Norway 1992 to 2012. All STEC infections notified to MSIS during this time period were shown (grey columns, n = 513). Only one STEC isolate per outbreak and per patient was included in the present study (black columns, n = 334 STEC isolates from 333 patients). Before 2006 the main focus of the clinical microbiological laboratories throughout Norway was detection of STEC O157. However, from 2007 the majority of these laboratories implemented techniques for detection of stx/Stx and the number of non-O157 cases increased. In 2006, 2009, and 2012, larger STEC outbreaks (>5 cases) were reported (Additional file 1)
