On the basis of the optimal cut-off values (DNI, 6.5%; WBC, 16590/mm3; and ANC, 14100/mm3) presented in Table 3, DNI values already elevated before the onset of organ/circulatory failure in 36 (82%) of the 44 patients with severe sepsis/septic shock, and decreased over time after ICU admission (p < 0.001).
