Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were determined using multivariate logistic regression controlling for age and sex. Non-severe malaria anaemia was used as reference category. SMA, severe malaria, non-severe malaria anaemia. AA, normal hemoglobin. AS, heterozygote sickle cell. SS, homozygote sickle cell. XX, multivariate logistic regression was not performed because the numbers were too few to run in the model
