Translation of retrospective severity to operational indicators of the burden of influenza. The retrospective severity index (\(\overline {\rho _{s, r}}\)) may be mapped to historical data on cumulative confirmed influenza-related hospitalizations per 100,000, peak week outpatient visits due to ILI (ILINet), and seasonal excess P&I mortality rates per 100,000 in order to inform decision makers about the expected range of disease burden in a given season.
