  2. Septicemia: consistent clinical picture and clinically significant pathogen isolated from blood culture
  3. Pneumonia: Pulmonary symptoms, fever, chest radiographic evidence of alveolar pulmonary disease and : (i) successful response to antibiotherapy with no activity against Pneumocystis carinii; or (ii) clinically significant bacterial pathogen isolated from blood culture.
  4. Parasitic enteritis: diarrhea and clinically significant parasitic pathogen on stool examination.
  5. Bacterial enteritis: diarrhea and clinically significant bacterial pathogen isolated from stool culture.
  6. †: non-classifying events with ≥ one day at hospital, or leading to death.
  7. Unexplained acute fever: Fever > 37.5°C of unexplained origin for < 30 days.
  8. Unexplained prolonged fever: Fever > 37.5 of unexplained origin for ≥ 30 days, intermittent or constant.
  9. Unexplained pulmonary disease: pulmonary fibrosis, n = 1; mediastinal mass, n = 1.
  10. Zoster: patient with zoster of the ear canal, fever and meningeal syndrome. Negative blood films for malaria, negative blood culture and negative cerebrospinal fluid culture.
