Current evidence suggests that only M. africanum West African-1 is found in Eastern-West Africa (Cameroon, and Nigeria; black) and M. africanum West African-2 alone is found in Western-West Africa (the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Senegal; speckled), but that the two clades overlap in Central-West Africa (Côte D'Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, and Sierra Leone; grey).
